๐ Devotional on John 16:1–10 – The Advantage of His Departure
๐ Scripture (NIV)
1 "All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer.

๐ฏ Theme
The departure of Jesus and the coming of the Holy Spirit – preparing the disciples to stand firm in truth.
๐ Observing God
- Jesus prepares His disciples so they will not fall away (v.1).
 - He warns of persecution and even death done in God’s name (v.2).
 - Persecution arises from ignorance of the Father and Jesus (v.3).
 - Jesus tells them now so they’ll remember later (v.4).
 - Jesus is returning to the Father (v.5, 10).
 - He promises to send the Advocate (Holy Spirit) (v.7).
 - The Spirit convicts the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment (v.8-10).

๐ง Observing Humanity
- Disciples will be persecuted (v.2).
 - People may harm believers thinking they serve God (v.2).
 - They lack true knowledge of God (v.3).
 - Disciples are filled with grief at Jesus’ words (v.6).
 - They do not ask where Jesus is going (v.5).
 - Unbelief is the root of sin (v.9).

๐ Interpreting God
Jesus, full of love and wisdom, doesn’t leave His disciples unprepared. His departure is not abandonment but a gracious move to send the Holy Spirit. The Advocate not only comforts but also convicts the world and empowers believers to know truth, endure persecution, and walk in righteousness. God’s sovereign plan unfolds in perfect love and timing, guiding His people into deeper trust and obedience.
๐ง Interpreting Humanity
Humanity often fails to understand divine plans, reacting emotionally instead of spiritually. The disciples’ sorrow reflects our own tendency to fear loss and avoid change. Those who do not know God may act in ignorance, even hostility. But the Spirit exposes these errors and calls for repentance and belief. We are deeply in need of God's revelation to see rightly and walk in truth.
๐ช Life Application
Am I living with awareness of the Holy Spirit’s presence and work in me? Do I respond to persecution or misunderstanding with grace and trust in God’s truth? Today, let me rely on the Spirit’s help and live out my faith boldly.
- Pray “Holy Spirit, help me” at least three times today in moments of decision or struggle.
 - Intercede for someone who misunderstands or opposes your faith.
 - Respond to hardship with compassion instead of resentment.

๐ Closing Prayer – Faith, Repentance, and Gratitude
Lord, I confess my limited understanding and emotional reactions to Your plans. Help me trust in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Forgive my unbelief and thank You for not leaving me alone. I walk today in Your truth, by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
