๐ John 8:31–40 Devotional – Truth That Sets You Free
1. Start with Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your words that lead us into freedom. Open my heart today to not only hear but to remain in Your truth. Help me live as a true disciple, shaped by Your Word. Amen.
2. Scripture Reading – John 8:31–40 (NIV) ๐
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 Jesus replied, "Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know that you are Abraham's descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word.
38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father."
39 "Abraham is our father," they answered.
"If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did.
40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.

- Only the Son can make us truly free (v.36).
- Jesus shares what He has seen in the Father’s presence (v.38).

- Those who sin are shown to be slaves to sin (v.34).
- They claimed to be Abraham’s children but acted in contradiction (v.37–40).

7. Interpretation – About God ๐ก
God’s truth is not simply information—it is liberating power. Jesus offers a freedom that goes beyond external circumstances: it frees us from slavery to sin. He speaks with divine authority, revealing what He has seen and heard from the Father. This truth cannot be separated from discipleship—only those who abide in Jesus' word walk in the light of freedom.
8. Interpretation – About People ๐ช
People often cling to status, heritage, or identity to avoid confronting their spiritual bondage. Even believers can resist truth when it challenges their assumptions. Though claiming to be Abraham’s descendants, they lacked Abraham’s faith and obedience. Human pride blinds us to our need for true freedom—freedom that only Jesus can give when we receive and remain in His word.
9. Life Application ๐ชด
Do I remain in Jesus’ teaching, or do I pick and choose what is convenient? Today, I will commit to not only reading His Word but practicing it. I will ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any hidden slavery in my life—habits, attitudes, or fears—and seek the Son’s freedom. True discipleship isn’t passive—it’s a life of ongoing surrender and transformation.
10. Spiritual Touch ✨
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” – John 8:32
11. Closing Prayer ๐
Jesus, thank You for speaking the truth that sets me free. Help me to remain in Your Word and live as Your disciple. Break every chain of sin and pride that still binds me, and lead me into deeper freedom in You. Amen.
12. Walk With the Word ๐
Let His truth lead you today. When tempted to rely on your status or strength, remember that freedom comes only through the Son—and in Him, you are truly free.
