๐ John 8:1–10 Devotional – Stones Dropped, Grace Given
1. Start with Prayer
Jesus, I come into Your presence aware of my faults. Help me not hide behind judgment or pride but meet You in honesty and grace. Open my eyes to see what You see. Amen.
2. Scripture Reading – John 8:1–10 (NIV) ๐
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group
4 and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"
6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.
7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

- Woman – v.3, v.4, v.9, v.10
- Stone / Stoning – v.5, v.7
- Sin – v.7, v.9
- Condemn – v.10
4. Theme ๐งญ
"Mercy triumphs over judgment"
5. Observing God ๐
- Jesus teaches early in the temple, drawing people in (v.2).
- He responds to traps with silence and wisdom (v.6).
- He invites self-reflection before judgment (v.7).
- He moves hearts through conscience, not coercion (v.9).
- He does not condemn but calls to a changed life (v.10).
6. Observing Humanity ๐
- Leaders use a woman’s sin as a tool to trap Jesus (v.3–6).
- They quote the Law but miss its heart (v.5).
- They press Jesus without sincere hearts (v.6–7).
- Their own consciences eventually lead them to walk away (v.9).
- The woman, though guilty, remains in front of Jesus and hears grace (v.10).
7. Interpretation – About God ๐ก
Jesus embodies both truth and grace. He knows the Law, yet sees through the heart behind it. He neither ignores sin nor rushes to condemn but patiently waits as truth convicts. His silence is not passivity—it is wisdom speaking. And in His final words, we see a God who forgives freely but calls for change: “Go now and leave your life of sin.” God’s mercy does not compromise holiness; it restores us to it.
8. Interpretation – About People ๐ช
We are quick to judge and slow to admit our own sin. Like the Pharisees, we use others’ failure to hide our guilt. But Jesus shows that no one stands righteous before God on their own. The crowd left, not because they understood grace, but because their hypocrisy was exposed. Yet the woman remained—broken, but honest—and it was to her that Jesus spoke forgiveness. God's grace is for those who stay when all others flee.
9. Life Application ๐ชด
Am I holding a “stone” of judgment toward someone in my heart? Have I forgotten that I too stand in need of mercy? Today, I will choose to drop the stone, to stay in Jesus’ presence, and hear His words afresh. I will remember that grace is not just something I receive—it’s something I must extend.
10. Spiritual Touch ✨
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” – John 8:10
11. Closing Prayer ๐
Jesus, thank You for not condemning me when You had every right to. Thank You for showing me mercy instead of judgment. Teach me to see others the way You see me—broken, yet beloved. Give me courage to walk away from sin and toward the life You call me to. Amen.
12. Walk With the Word ๐
Let Jesus’ words echo through your day: “Neither do I condemn you.” Walk humbly, extend grace, and live as one set free.
